Right you are, it's compiling 32-bit.
I had a look though. Nearly all the processes running on my two 64-bit machines
are 32-bit processes.
qemu-kvm runs 64 bit native.
That's about it. Do you have a real need for >2GB address space in a ruby
script / extension?

Did you try traceroute -I pkg.openindiana.org
Many ISP's do not respond to UDP pings.
In this case it looks like the pkg host was actually down.
