I have seen some conflicting emails on other lists that seem to say "do
not use openindiana, please use based on snv_160!"
What gives? Are they talking about something else altogether, or is
there a useful alternative to openindiana?

Solaris 11 express is snv_151a, so whoever came up with 160, I don't know.

I would guess that post was from an Oracle employee who has access to
the unreleased (to the public) development versions of what used to be
called OpenSolaris, but is now called Oracle Solaris 11.
