On closer examination I think I should be able to remove any DHCP
packages as the server has only static IP addresses but I'm not sure
what "resource-pools/poold" refers to or how to uninstall it.

pkg and attempting to uninstall yields:
# pkg uninstall java

'pkg://openindiana.org/runtime/java@0.5.1
You could just download a JDK/JRE to /usr/local, and then set your JAVA_HOME
or whatever properties to use the newer Java in /usr/local.
Which application are you needing a newer Java version for? You could also
get firefox to use a local java from plugins:

I didn't get to it until now, but JRE on oi_148 is still being pulled from
OpenSolaris 134 repo, and it's getting pretty old (Firefox plugin is pulled
from OpenIndiana repo, but it's outdated too: 1.6.0_18). What is the
recommended way to update Java on oi? Simply removing java packages from the
