Thanks All,
You have some great information here and I'll dig more into this to see
what may, or may not, be possible.
John, you are correct in that the idea, if at all possible, was to run the
X-Server inside a container/vm and keep the core IllumOS/OpenIndiana to the
absolute minimum in side as
I remember the same discussion.
As far as i remember one needs to pass the graphics card into the zone
via the device passthrough configuration. From there on it is the same

I think the OP also wants to run the X server in a container with

Lonnie,
The suspension was for OmniOS support and development from OmniTI. The project
is active as a community supported product called OmniOS CE. I've never tried
to run X-windows in a zone but you can ask on the omnios mailing list:

Thanks for responding to my inquiry about OpenIndiana.
Basically, I really like the small footprint of SmartOS and its ability to
be a good hypervisor (Linux and Windows) but for a desktop project, I
wanted to be able to have a minimal OS that basically just run the
containers/zones and then have

Greetings All,
I have recently been playing around a little with SmartOS for running
containers and hypervizing VM's for which it seems to work pretty well, and
wanted to also investigate the desktop side of things as well so I hope
