Please disregard. I was able to figure it out myself with some googling.
It looks like I must have manually set up a mount point for poolname/folder
that was the same as the poolname when I was originally experimenting with
creating the array. After confirming the duplicate mountpoint with the zf

Thanks for the detailed reply, you nailed it with the zfs mount -a issue,
but I am not sure how to resolve it.
I first get a message of:
Cannot mount 'poolname/folder' directory is not empty
svc:/system/filesystem/local:default: WARNING: /usr/sbin zfs mount -a
