I use the SC216A which then has 6 mini-SAS connectors (4 drives each)
and use that with two LSI 9211-8. Works great so far.
No port expanders there, so nothing that could fail.
And no potential throughput bottlenecks.

I tried checking with the configuration utility (via Control-C while booting),
could not find any way ..
I have tried different disk backplanes on Supermicro 745TQ, 836A and 846E2 all
with same results.

Yep, I found that one too when I googled the symptoms of my box. There
may be some relation between the symptoms, on the other hand there are
