Hi Peter,
I'm contacting you directly, hoping this will help saving some time.
If we come up to anything you can always post a summary on the list.
I think you should try a l

I'll try this in a VM, but it'll take a little while. Just talking about the
Python 2.4 attempt, did you also install the 64-bit python-devel rpm? The
warning message specifically says that it's linking against a 32-bit python,

Hi Noel,
Just an update on my failing struggles.
So I've restored the initial setting of my CentOS machine, meaning I removed
all version of Python (tricky).
and reinstalled the system python which is python2.4 (and not
-enable-shared).
wget

Hi Noel,
Sorry to bother you again.
So I did try to compile against the system python. It's giving a different
error but I guess the source is the same. It looks like a 32/64 bits issue
to me.
Cheers,
Peter
make clean
cmake ../openbabel-2.3.2
-DEIGEN2_INCLUDE_DIR=/home/peter/li
My bad. Just checked on my VM here, and it's linking against
/usr/lib/libpython2.7.a, so that part seems alright.
I think you're close. Is there a 64-bit system Python (perhaps
available through the package manager)?

You should be compiling against a .so not an .a, e.g. libpython2.6.so.

I've seen this before. You should compile against the system Python. Your
locally-compiled version was not compiled in a way consistent with linking
against it (I don't know what options you should have used, but I recognise
the symptoms).

Dear All,
I'm trying to install openbabel with python bindings on a 64 bits CentOS
release 5.9 (kernel 2.6.18-348.1.1.el5).
I performed the following steps:
(I also downloaded and unzipped the eigen2 package as shown in the cmake
line)
tar zxf openbabel-2.3.2.tar.gz
mkdir build
cd bu
