Well, hairlines could be interpreted as not “a very thin line”. Then Poppler
just decides to draw them as 1px always, like usual with hairlines.

I can also reproduce the issue with Japanese characters.
By the way, if I save the PDF into a new file and then open it with Evince, the
Japanese text is also not rendered in Evince.
