Now that Okular is closing in on 15.08 release, it seems this bug is still
present in the version (15.07.70) I am using. (Distro KaOS)

can't reproduce any kind of slowlyness, everything is silky smooth, can you
removing (save them before in case you want to restore them) the files at
.kde/share/config/okular* and see if it makes any difference

Also you may want to try running okular throught
valgrind --tool=massif okular
And attach the file so we can see the memory evolution pattern
