Actually since i'm running Ubuntu 14.04 myself i'll just send you a .deb
package you can install with dpkg -i and see if it helps

Found what the problem was.
I had run:
$ s okular /tmp/file\ with\ spaces.pdf
where "s" is:
#!/bin/bash
$@ &> /var/log/s.log &
which removes the slashes...

You've going to have to give me a hint on where to put a breakpoint to get some
useful information, because if I just go into gdb and say "run as.pdf", it
gives me:
