I believe I addressed all the cross test pollution related issue which were
causing test failures. I will merge this PR into trunk.

It looks like collection loading mechanism changes in pytest 8.0

A newer version of pytest exists, but since this PR has been edited by
someone other than Dependabot I haven't updated it. You'll get a PR for the
