If your laptop works but you're having trouble with
xbmcmythtv then I'd suggest the mythpretty.sh from .16
, mythweb and samba. That's my config and it rocks.
Steve nailed it. You where most likely looking at a
non T3CH build. I haven't had any issues using other
builds (pimped, etc) the only difference should be the
added scripts. That said T3CH's reputation is good
enough to be the 'supported' build.

I don't know if they count as DVB files but the .nuvs from my Air2PC on myth 18.1 play fine in VLC 8.4. I use the wxWindows frontend. It looks quite a bit like the old windows media player or the current media player classic. There is also kvlc and gvlc.
