Took your advice and downloaded
mysql-3.23.42-pc-linux-gnu-i686.tar.gz
Placed it in /usr/local
Renamed /usr/local/mysql to /usr/local/mysql-old
unpacked with
tar -zxvf mysql-3.23.42-pc-linux-gnu-i686.tar.gz
which made /usr/local/mysql-3.23.42-pc-linux-gnu-i686
