Still have HOSTNAME error

Running 4.2 Freebsd, Apache 1.3.19, Mysql 3.23.37 and Php 4.0.5 (or trying to) inhouse no connection to net. When I start Mysql get @HOSTNAME@ not found. If I type hostname at prompt it returns the units name This is getting frustrating. Any help appreciated. Thanks Howard Picken (Server
