Are subscribe and lists commands obsolete?

I have been trying to wrap my head around what suscribe and lists commands are. For me mutt handles mailing lists perfectly without these commands so to make sure I am not missing some (not obvious) benefits allow me to ask the experts. >From the documentation I found the subscribe command allows
