install slang (in the ports) and do this:
cd /usr/ports/mail/mutt
make -dUSE_NCURSES_PORT -dUSE_SLANG install
you also need slang for default to work (at least I did)

The latest versions of ncurses do allow the use of the color "default",
and Mutt will work with this.

fine, except that color support doesn't seem to work. I don't have X
