Turning off highlighting

I just installed vim on a shared server and everyone's pretty unhappy with all the new highlighting they're seeing when they edit files. How can I turn off the underlining/highlighting for users when they edit a file? Do I have to edit every .vim file on the system? Thanks for your help, --
