You open the mail in Mutt's pager? Then it's a misconfigured locale.
Set an appropriate locale for your terminal's charset, perhaps exporting

Sounds like a terminal problem. Have you tried just regular xterms? ;)

Hi,
I got a strange problem here:
Suppose I got a new mail, which text includes german umlauts.
I open the mail and all umlauts are diplayed as "\xxx" ( x = [0-9]).
Now I scroll the text off screen (using vim and mrxvt) and back again
and TADA! the umlaust are displayed correctly.
