I have my local mail delivered by postfix on a maildir directory structure.
I can use mutt to check this kind of mail easily:
set folder = "~/.maildir"
mailboxes !
I can also use mutt to check my IMAP mail remotely:
set folder = "imaps://imap.gmail.com:993"
mailboxes "=INBOX"
