I found the problem. I had an .exrc file. I renamed it and vi ran with no
problems.
I even set my mutt editor as vi, created and sent an email, and again, no
problems.
All is well now :)
Thanks to all for your help, but also sorry for the noise since it wasn't mutt
related at all.

I use mutt to connect to my imap server.
I can browse the folders on the Server, but mutt does not check
for new mails in all folders. Only in those which are in the
"mailboxes" command. Since I like to create new folders and filters,
its hard to keep the List of mailboxes in sync. Is there a
