I found the problem. I had an .exrc file. I renamed it and vi ran with no problems. I even set my mutt editor as vi, created and sent an email, and again, no problems. All is well now :) Thanks to all for your help, but also sorry for the noise since it wasn't mutt related at all. Michael E.
