No doubt of it! I birded around Pope County much of this week and had a
similar, but anecdotal, experience. Martins were trying to feed low over
any body of water, as were swallows. I saw very weak Martins that I am sure
will not survive.

Must have been the same one that hung around the fishing dock on the SW
corner of Harriet. He would just hang around, look at the people, and I

A big day in Plymouth!
First ever – real time – observation of baby Wood Ducks jumping from the box.
As suspected, there was apparent “nest dumping” - there are 22 baby ducks
following mom.
Over the weekend some time -- 9 baby Hooded Mergansers on the pond.

We had a new yard bird yesterday here at the Stivland estate – a Black-crowned
Night-heron paid a visit to the pond. We thought it might night roost here but
– no such luck – it apparently flew off to join its family or maybe to party

Paid a visit to Blue Hill trail today for White-winged Crossbills. Found them

The Hummingbird is still visiting our feeder here in Plymouth. Consultation
with senior MOU members has led to a consensus that it is a Ruby-throated

Drove highway 55 to Glenwood early this morning. Red-winged Blackbirds are
back in force at least as far as Pope county. Most wetlands have males
apparently staking claims. No reason they stopped here.

My wife and I birded Sherburne NWR today. The Red-headed Woodpecker pair
appear to have succcessfully nested as they were feeding a juvenile bird. As
far as we could see there was one offspring.
Missed the Cerulean but saw lots of others. Lark Sparrow is still there, with
young. Black Terns

Does anyone have up-to-date information on the status of the Stilts?
Has the water risen due to recent rains?
Have the eggs hatched?
If so, are the birds still in the area or visible?
I am willing to stop and ask the local folks if no one knows.

had studied it in school.
This week they helped me build a Chickadee winter roost box. Next week we plan
to put up a third Wood Duck nest box.

third box in an effort to minimize nest dumping.
I guess the bottom line is that, as we all know, nature is finicky and
harsh. Just more justification to find and install a camera next year.

have already started hooting in the woods, and the Juncos,
sparrows, and ducks are back. Woodies are doing a good job of cleaning up the
acorns.
Maybe it wasn’t such a bad season after all.
