Lake Kohlmier in Owatonna has open water as a result of aerators. Up until
yesterday only a few Mallards and 2 Canada Geese have used it. Today, a
Common Merganser checked in.

As of 7:30 this evening there was still one spotted near the corner of 690th
and 130th. Looked to be a female.

About 100 yards south of the (southern) intersection of CR #3 and CR #4, in
Steele County, and looking west about 1/4 mile (toward the Straight River)
we watched one eagle looking from the nest while another was perched a few
feet away. In that the bird in the nest was off to one side, it may hav

7:00 on March 10th. SCAUP are in the water at Lake Kohlmier in Owatonna.

The town of Hope is west of I-35.
We are at the same latitude east of I-35 which, I guess, is on the Hopeless
side.

Today, 12-19-2015, 3 Short-eared Owls were seen on NE 84th Street, about 1
mile south of Highway 12 in Merton Township in NE Steele County. They were
seen and photographed (alas, a cell phone camera) by three experienced

My siskin numbers have dropped from 30 in the beginning of December to maybe
10, now (1/12/16). I have found 3 dead since this cold weather began. All
other feeder birds seem to be holding their own. House finches are up for
us. We usually have 3 or 4. This year 15 is not uncommon. Our feeder

Yesterday, 12/19/2016, 3 SEOWs were sighted at the Armstrong Unit, about 1.5
miles north of Rice Lake State Park in NE Steele County.
The road is NE 84th Ave. Best access from I-35 is to get off on 26th Street
and go east. Continue on it until it becomes #8. Stay with #8 until you can
turn ea
This afternoon, March 19, at The Marsh, south on CR #45, one mile north of CR
#30, 5 Great Blue Herons were at a rookery about 1/2 mile east of the pond of
The Marsh. 3 Sand Hill Cranes and a mix of waterfowl were also spotted as
well as one Meadowlark and 2 Killdeers.

While looking at the feeders at our deck (9:00 AM) I noticed a female cardinal
"pestering" something.
I couldn't tell what the "something" was at first but with binoculars it slowly
became obvious ... it was a female hummingbird!

It was in an unplowed corn stubble field.

The rookery at The Marsh on CR 45 about 12 miles south of Owatonna had 3 Great
Blue Herons in it this evening.
It also had an eagle sitting on the edge of the rookery.

The Marsh, which is about 10 miles south of Owatonna on CR #45, had 5 Trumpeter
swans calling as the flew by this morning.
Also of note was a Kestrel in that same area.
We also counted 10 Bald Eagles on CR #3 this evening at about the same latitude
as The Marsh.

Last evening (3-26-19), at dusk, there were around 300 Tundra Swans at The
Marsh, about 10 miles south of Owatonna on CR #45.
There were likely more as they could be heard calling from places deeper in the
marsh where they could not be seen.

Sitting atop a fence post on the south side of SW 128th Street (gravel road).
Basically open country, with brushy areas!
Black bill was obvious. No "rust" in the wings. Belly and underside of tail
not seen as the bird flew away from me.

Alas, as I got the scope in position it flew off and vanished.

One was spotted flying WNW from the "newer hog building" which is located on
700th St, west of the intersection of 120th Ave.
A local person indicated there were 2, a male and a female, in the area.
Sorry for the late posting but I ddare-say this weather should keep them in the

Displayed all the classic features ... slight dihedral of its rather pointed

9 White-faced Ibis, on the west side of CR #45 South, The site is about 11
miles south of Owatonna and south of 4 lane highway # 14.
They were reasonably close and easy to view.
