Over the past few days three green herons have landed several times in the
branches of a dead tree on our lakefront. Yesterday morning four of them
stood on the dock for a time.

Yesterday six pine grosbeaks landed in a pine tree in our yard north of
Brainerd. Gorgeous birds! They found something they liked in the branches
of the tree, but they didn't stay long.

Watching a juvenile pileated learn skills from its parents is most
entertaining this month. Both parents have been giving lessons on seed
cakes, suet feeders, and tree trunks. Baby is trying its best but not very
adept yet and being fed by parents.

Just saw a yellowheaded blackbird mixed in with all the redwinged
blackbirds and grackles. Both head and chest were brilliant yellow orange.

Today a small flock of Canada geese is mixed in with the swans in the open
water above the Gull Lake dam. Last week there were a few ducks, too,
probably goldeneyes.

displaying territorial mating rituals.
