Minnesota to spend
some time following White-winged Crossbills. With the huge spruce
cone crop and all the crossbills around, this a great time to add to
the scant nesting data from Minnesota.

This afternoon there was a flock of at least 44 Long-tailed Ducks at
Stoney Point. They were diving far out on Lake Superior near the
western end of Stoney Point Drive (there were 14 here on March 22).
There was also a Common Loon nearby.

autumns). The other was downtown in the grassy area between the
large black locomotive and the Edna G. tugboat.

Kim Eckert's group found a Sage Thrasher today at about 5:00 p.m. at
the Grand Marais Campground between the ballfield and the lake.

could find in The Loon was October 18, 1994 (there is an October 22
south date in Janssen's book).
At Burlington Bay there were 2 Long-tailed Ducks and two Red-necked
Grebes.

leads you to a water treatment plant (at the east boundary of the
Northshore Mining property). The robin flock was in the birch/spruce
woods south of the road. There were also about 75 Bohemian Waxwings
in the same spot.

Field Sparrow was found in the residential area of Beaver Bay (a
block north of the Lemon Wolf Cafe).
The Red-bellied Woodpecker was still present yesterday in Two Harbors
on 4th Avenue, between 2nd and 3rd Street.

back to the same trees and we were able to study the Hoary off and on
for about 45 minutes.

On Saturday evening there was an Eared Grebe at Agate Bay in downtown
Two Harbors, near the breakwall. A few Horned and Red-necked Grebes
were also present.

and near the fence south of the lighthouse. It didn't seem to mind
all the tourists, so hopefully it will hang around for a little

This evening there was a Buff-breasted Sandpiper in the fairway of
the #1 hole at the Two Harbors golf course. This is about a quarter
mile east of the clubhouse.
There was also a Baird's Sandpiper on the rocks in front of the
lighthouse at Agate Bay this afternoon.

lot of time diving, so you had to be persistent to see it in the
waves.
This bird was reported to MN-Bird late on Thursday evening, and was
originally seen on Tuesday morning. Birders looked without success
for it yesterday.

As of 1:30 pm, the Yellow-billed Loon had not been seen today at
Agate Bay in Two Harbors. At least 20-30 birders searched
unsuccessfully throughout the morning, and viewing conditions were
good.

There was a winter-plumaged Pacific Loon at Agate Bay in Two Harbors
this morning near the end of the western breakwall. I heard about
the bird second-hand through Jan Green - it apparently was present on
Thursday, too.
This may be the same bird that Dan Amerman reported on October 26.

A RED-THROATED LOON and 540 BONAPARTE'S
Nancy Jackson reported a Piping Plover this morning at Twin Lakes in
northern St. Louis County. I don't have specific directions to the
bird, but North and South Twin Lakes are about 5 miles south of
Aurora on CR 100.

This evening I had a Field Sparrow in my backyard at 320 2nd Avenue
in Two Harbors. This was new for my yard list and one of only a
handful that I've seen in Lake County.

A Western Tanager was seen briefly yesterday morning (5/10) at a

This morning there was a Townsend's Solitaire in our yard at 320 2nd
Avenue in Two Harbors. This is a mile away from the one seen last
Sunday at 15th Avenue and 8th Street so it could be the same bird,

A EURASIAN COLLARE
Bob Myers found two Harlequin Ducks yesterday (April 1) on Lake
Superior at Silver Bay. They were seen from the beach that is
southwest of the AmericInn and just east of the Northshore Mining
plant (know locally as "black beach" -- crushed rocks from the
plant).
