and the usual suspects. Some walkers mentioned seeing a "small hawk" just
before I arrived, which I assume was that Sharp-shinned Hawk.
It was good to be out in this fine weather in this fine state. Good birding!

than what is typical.

rsity are poor. I found 11 species yesterday in
Golden Valley, with Wilson's Warbler being the most common and abundant.
I've encountered almost no migrating vireos, tanagers, etc. I have had no
trouble finding Empidonax flycatcher species, however.

A friend and I looked on Lake Calhoun from 11am-noon today and we did NOT
see the Long-tailed Duck. We drove around the whole lake. We did see the
two Common Loons and a Horned Grebe.

I was finally able to see the Long-tailed Duck on the SW corner of Lake
Calhoun (in Minneapolis) today from 12-12:30pm. It was actively diving
south and east of the floating dock structure. I was able to get some great
views.

recently-seen "good" birds. I didn't hear nor see any. I ran into two other
birders who also came up empty-handed.
I also drove over to the Theodore Wirth volleyball court area to check out
the shorebird mudflats, only to find 2 Spotted Sandpipers and one K
. It was giving its
descending nasal chatter. I have been unable to find any good recordings of
the call notes online, so anyone with more experience with these species
can help me out.
E-mail me off-channel for directions to any of the previously-mentioned
sites.

FLYCATCHER was heard giving the "wit" call near the dock. 2 SWAINSON'S
THRUSH were seen from the parking lot as well.
The group also got great looks at MARSH WREN, SORA (~3-4 birds), and
VIRGINIA RAIL (1-2 birds).

Update for this morning: Despite lots of open water yesterday, most of Lake Bde

gulls were on the southeast side of the lake. And to correct my
observations from yesterday, the gulls were originally at the northwest end
before being scared by the Bald Eagle, then they flew to the east shore. I
had gotten my directions mixed up.

*Boreal Chickadee: 1-2 birds present at the Admiral Road feeders around
9:30am

I tried for the Whimbrel reported earlier today in Morristown, Rice County.
I watched the wetland and surrounding corn stubble for ten minutes around
dusk and only saw a pair of Blue-winged Teal.

Apparently there were two Carolina Wrens coming to a feeder in Greenwood
(Hennepin County) on February 15. Those are all the details I have from the
Rare eBird Alert e-mail I received. Maybe someone else can shed light on
the sighting...

have another report of a Cerulean Warbler that was heard singing at
Westwood Hills Nature Center (St. Louis Park) yesterday. It was on/along
the highest hill in the Basswood/Maple trail. We hope to try for it
tomorrow and will report if we have luck.

every five minutes, so it still gets used regularly.

first-of-the-year Yellow-rumped Warbler (1), plus other standard fare like
Golden-crowned Kinglets, Northern Flicker, Brown Creeper, Northern Harrier,
Eastern Meadowlark, etc.

like Rusty migration has been temporarily stalled by cold weather. So keep
on reporting them regardless of the deadline--more could be coming in later
