I never build on RedHat, I consider it a
prepackage type distribution; If the package you need is not available you are
out of luck.
If you want to build tools, go to a
distribution set up with a clean build environment: I recommend slackware or one
of these derivatives.

My thought is that this general type of problem is solved by defining a protocol for the conversation. If you want to know if your client is [still] listening, send a challenge that it must answer.
