some updates:
I have tested with arecord, and it works flawlessly, even with -M switch
as this user.
arecord -M -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D default foobar.wav
gives a playable audio file
fuser /dev/dsp
gives no process id's
and running "lavrec -f a -i P -d 2 -q 80 -a 16 -r 44100 -U -s -l -1
I'm using the tools to do marvelous things with some video I
have. I just wanted to say thanks to someone. Hope that's
not too dumb.

Recently switched to a new computer, and had to go over to 2.6.x kernels
and alsa
to get support for the hardware. I have ICH5 based audio, and a DC10+
mjpeg-card.
(also have usb audio devices added and hotplug enabled, so that also add
to the confusion) :-(
