I did #pkg_add -u and got the latest update to sane-backends. I also changed the permissions on the devive nodes on /dev/ugen0*, as that was the driver revealed with # usbdevs -s addr 03: 04a9:1913 Canon, LiDE 300 high speed, power 500 mA, config 1, rev 1.00, iSerial 4B8A99 drive
