thank you so much for your valuable input. I've found personal experience to trump just about any other information, especially the 'official docs'. I've decided to stick with PATA for now, knowing that it's stable, reliable and really not much slower than SATA for the drives I'm looking at. tha

Thanks everyone for the great info. I'm not, in fact, interested in RAID support offered by the hardware, just plain-jane SATA. I had found the hardware list for pciide, and attempted to match up actual product model numbers with the chipset numbers listed, but found very little in the way of use
