i've got identical problem with compiling X after applying patch on two
i386 machines.
I did:
cd /usr/src/XF4
patch -p0 < 002_xorg.patch
make build
as root and here's tail of make build messages:
gcc -o xf86config3 -O2 -ansi -Dasm=__asm
-L../../../../../exports/lib xf86config.o cards.o
