corporate IT may do something overly creative. just in case, i want to
pull some years of email off the imap server onto local disk. there are
tools for this, but can mailmate do it in a way i can still access the
mail while on local disk?

For whatever it's worth, I tried to use the Select Duplicates command in
MailMate version 5964, but nothing has changed; it still doesn't do anything as
far as I can tell. I've tried in both a Sources folder and in a local archive
(offline) folder containing obvious duplicates.
