I copy the link and use ⌘K on MailMate for that after copying the link
in a browser, no pasting.

1. There is pasting a text string that begins with “http://“. For
me, this indeed turns in to a full-fledged link automatically. I think
this is the sort of thing that Sam is talking about.
2. There is pastin
In my hands I don’t get a hyperlink in MS Word until I press Space
once. In Mailmate, with Markup set to Markdown, for whatever reason I
get an hyperlink right away. As it always behaved that way, I never
investigated why. Sorry not to be of more help.

When pasting into Microsoft Word, I get a hyperlink, so I know the data makes

Yes! I use an Apple shortcut which works fine for me to copy/paste or
embed a web link into the body of an email. Sounds like what you were
trying to do manually. I think you’ll find it useful.
First, the long way… Copy and paste:
