It means you can monitor multiple mailboxes, including smart ones: maybe one

Open Mailmate's Preferences, and choose the Counters panel. On the left, select
each corner in turn and make sure "in menu bar" is unchecked.

Anyway, I switched off all counter preferences in the preferences pane - not
working the green button is still there
