As of today, I can reliably trigger a spinning-pizza hang by having a
message open in its own window for viewing, and trying to scroll it with
the space bar. Hit spacebar, MailMate freezes for a few seconds (mouse
cursor doesn't respond to mouse movement), and then I get the spinning
pizza, tho

just a few observations for new views ...
1) the editor / preview view is now taking up more than half because of
that big bar with a (+) on it. makes it quite 'cramped' to write.
could that + take space away from the preview rather than the editor
?
2) dialog button ordering changed

because you are using a custom layout.
