i had the same problems with drivers from nvidia but i could get resolutions
like 1440 x 900 with "nv" drivers . i think nvidia stopped supporting old
hardware like gforce 2 mx . remove the "nvidia" drivers and select "nv"
insted .

I think you should install nvidia-glx-legacy package for the old nvidia
