Thanks for the advice. I have solved the issue by fresh reinstalling
the ubuntu 10.10 after protecting the home folder

Anyway, you should still be able to login through rescue mode. Also try all
the kernels listed in the boot menu.
But unfortunately I don't have much knowledge with the new Unity desktop.

are u getting the ubuntu login screen ? Then you can select the
classic interface from there
