I want to be able to take screenshots but not of the entire screen. If I use
cmd+shift+3, it takes a screenshot of the whole screen, including some
background windows, menu bars, and things like that.

try using command shift number 5 and i believe you can choose what part of the
screen you can take a screen shot of.
