Whether you use List view or Column view is irrelevant. When you open a folder using CMD + DownArrow, you are not opening a new window. When you leave a folder, and move to the parent, or enclosing folder using CMD + UpArrow, you are doing all of this in the same Finder window. You can confirm t

I can’t say for sure. Perhaps you have left them all open without realizing you did that. I suggest you use CMD + W, to close all open Finder windows and tabs, then be aware of what windows you have open going forward, and be sure you close any Finder windows and tabs in the future. Keep in min
