Why don’t you just upgrade to Catalina now, and worry about Big Sur once it has
been out for awhile.
Catalina has been out for almost a year, and is very stable.

I suggest paying the 99-cents per month, and upgrading iCloud storage to 50 GB.

I’d do the Catalina update and put off the Big Sur update until it has been out
for a while. That way you avoid any unforeseen issues, but it’s your Mac and
your choice, so suit yourself.
