spotlight doesn't work!

Hi again listers, firs of all I want to thank everybody who had responded to my questions in the past. Here I come with another question. Since the last OS minor update several weeks ago I noticed spotlight doesn't work anymore.  No matter what I write in the edit box I never get results.

I do notice sometimes that the spotlight results are in a table that I need to interact with. On the topic of Alfred (or is it alford?) I am glad to hear that you are able to use it with VoiceOver. I had communication with the developer at one point and he seemed to think that it would not work
