This would be he "mute voiceover" command, the only default place to find it is in the touchpad commander where it has the same gesture as on the IOS platform, which is double click with three fingers. There is also a mute checkbox in the voice area of VoiceOver utility but I expect this leaves

Just so you know, you can make audio calls to other FaceTime users, again, like Skype. Phone calls have to be audio, but pure FaceTime calls don't have to be video. If you have Siri on your Macs, which you should if you have 10.12 or newer, try telling Siri to "make a FaceTime call to contact",
