the files are less than 40 seconds in length. I followed the steps of first

Good point. I was assuming, from Will's post, that he already
had MP3 ring tones and wanted to convert them for the iPhone. My

portion of the song you wanted to convert to the AAC file since
ringtones have to be 40 seconds or less.

Also, for those who have amadeus pro, you can have it directly export
to ringtone from the file menu.

to first convert the MP3 file into an AAC file in iTunes. Then,
manually change the extension from M4A to M4R. Then play it in iTunes
and it should be added to your ring tones list.
