Good place to use the item chooser. In the list of threads quadruple tap with
three fingers. This should bring up the item chooser and then type "unread" in
the search field.
If you have a bluetooth keyboard that is paired with the phone, then use
control-option-I to start the item chooser.
Try checking in your iPhone’s Notification Center.
Unread messages should show in there.
