I've had to do this for bookshare xml files:
In the downloads folder, (or whatever folder your file is in,), when you open
a file from the list, the filename appears with the extension. Erase the x in
xml and input ht, or just erase the xml and write in html

Change the extension from xml to html. You will be asked if you are
sure. Then you should be able to open and read.
