The point, though, is that you might be able to pair it; however, you can
forget making a connection. This is because every time you try, the phone will
tell you that the device is not supported.

What can you do if you do pair it as I've paired it before but couldn't see
anything you could do with it accept for sending files.

You can't. At least, not natively. You need a third party app on your Mac
such for example as "TypetoIphone" to make a connection possible.
