Try going under the View pane of Mail Prefs and changing the number of lines
under Preview to "None".

The preview pane, as far as I understand it, is the third column of the new
layout. The lines you hear read are in the second column, the message list
itself, and if you disable that third pane Mail shouldn't mark messages read
for you. I may be wrong on this, as the new Mail layout is

I just interacted with the splitter between the messages and preview pane and
then did a vo+left arrow a million times I think until I think it said zero.

Well, I finally did it and installed Lion overtop of SL. Now,
1. How do I get rid of the preview pain in Mail?
2. Also, in Mail, what seems to be the best consensus on how to deal with
conversations in Mail?
I'm using the new view and think that, mostly, I can get the hang of it p
