Hi, If your audio books are mp3 format itunes will think they are
music. Look in your music option in itunes. Once you find your book
you can hit command+i on it and under options tell itunes it is an
audio book.

My audiobooks are in the itunes library in the folder audiobooks. So it's my
home folder / music folder / itunes folder / itunes media folder / audiobooks.
The only thing I can think of is whether you have itunes set to copy files into
its library or leave them where they were originally.
