James, yes, you can create an alias on your desktop which points to
your ITunes folder if you like. Some people don't prefer the ITunes
interface as much as others, so this gives them a way to access their
music in finder as you suggest.

I made a alias to my i tunes podcast folder and put it in the dock. I
do not have a ipod but I do have a victor reader stream. Now I can go
to the dock and open the folder and copy the podcasts to my stream.
