Now I didn't know this. I always thought quicknav had to be turned on
and the rotor set to characters words or lines. Good to know and cheers

Here are the various ways of doing it.
Interact with the element for which you wish to select characters or words and
use the usual Shift plus right arrow for characters and Option-Shift-Right
