I'm not sure you mean what you say. You format disk drives in disk utility,
located in /applications/utilities/. The method is identical and has nothing to
do with seeing or mounting the disk on your desktop. In fact, you cannot format
a drive with encryption. You can write encrypted data t
First to show the hard drive on the desktop go to finder preferences by
pressing command , to open preferences next choose the check box that says show
hard disk so it can show on the desktop.

I accidentally formatted my disk wrong with encryption. Although this is a
good measure it looks like it's not showing up on my desktop. How do I go
about selecting the drive again so I can format it differently?
